Part of this pattern is worked in turned rounds, aka joined rows. When directed with the instruction "turn," after slip stitching to finish the round, turn to work back the other direction as if you were working in rows. Using a stitch marker in the last stitch of each round will help you find the first stitch of the next round.
Instructions for all three sizes are listed in the pattern as Child(Small, Large). Sizes are based on measurements provided by the Craft Yarn Council.
Instructions (Pom Version):
- Rnd 1: Leaving a long tail,
FHDC 54 (62, 68); join to work in the round. (54(62, 68) sts)
Use long tail to close bottom of first row. - Rnd 2 and 3: Ch 1, hdc in the 3rd loop of first st, fpdc in next st,
*hdc in 3rd loop of next st, fpdc in next st;
rep from * around, join. (54(62, 68) sts) - Rnd 4: Ch 1, hdc in the 3rd loop of first st, fpdc in next st,
*hdc in 3rd loop of next st, fpdc in next st;
rep from * around; join and turn.

- Rnd 6: Ch 1, hdc in first 17(20, 22) sts,
fptr in the next 4 sts 2 rows below,

- Rnd 21: Ch 2 (does not count), dc2tog around; join. (27(31, 34)sts)
- Rnd 22: Repeat Rnd 21; if 1 st remains, dc in last st, join. (14(16, 17)sts)
- Rnd 23: Repeat Rnd 22; break yarn leaving a long tail. (7(8, 9)sts).
Use tail to gather crown closed and finish off. Add pom pom if desired.

Staghorn Slouch Pom Version
- Repeat above instructions through Rnd 18 (skipping Rnds 19 and 20), then work as for Rnds 21 and 22.
- Rnd 23: Working sts to enclose the elastic hair band, (sc, ch1) in each st around; join and break yarn.
